When the heathen population of Alexandria rioted against the Christians in 249, Apollonia was beaten and her teeth extracted with tongs. Being threatened with fire, Apollonia “being kindled within by a greater fire of the Holy Spirit” walked into the fire of her own accord. She is the patron saint of dentists. (Note the necklace of teeth identifying Apollonia).
